A Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed an armed man on Ebeneezer and Wesselman streets in Green Township on Friday shortly before midnight according to Hamilton County Chief Deputy Sean Donovan. Donovan said the department was told the man was heavily armed and had barricaded himself in his residence some time before midnight when the Sheriff's department arrived.

Earlier in the evening the suspect had fired shots into his neighbor's yard, said Donovan.

Police negotiators asked the suspect to come out of the home unarmed. When the suspect came out he pointed a rifle and the unnamed deputy opened fire according to Donovan.

A man who was holding a knife to a teenage hostage's throat was shot and killed by a Fayette County sheriff's deputy early Saturday when he refused to drop the knife, authorities said.

Fayette sheriff's spokesman Brent Rowan said deputies responding to a 3:35 a.m. call about a fight in progress at a home on Buckeye Road "encountered a 22-year-old male suspect holding a 17-year-old victim hostage with a knife to the victim's throat."

Rowan said the suspect, whose name has not been released, refused to drop the knife.
After ordering the man multiple times to drop the knife, a deputy fired a single shot, striking and killing the suspect, Rowan said.

The deputy's name has not been released.

The GBI was called in to investigate the incident, Rowan said.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A drug dealer involved in the chase that led to the death of a Wilmington Police officer will spend 20 years in federal prison.

A judge in Raleigh sentenced Eric Grant Smith, 28, of Wilmington earlier this week. Smith pleaded guilty in January to possession with the intent to distribute more than 50 kilograms of marijuana.

In February 2009, investigators say Smith was a passenger in a car that led Wilmington Police on a chase. Wilmington Police Officer Rich Matthews died when he lost control of his cruiser while responding to a call for assistance.

"Eric Smith broke the law, and due to his actions, we lost a great police officer. This outcome will provide some sense of closure for the men and women of the Wilmington Police Department,"

Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said in a statement. "Justice has been served."

Prosecutors say Smith was a leader of a drug trafficking organization that was importing high quality marijuana in bulk amounts from Canada through New York to be distributed in various locations throughout North Carolina. They say Smith was responsible for distributing more than 400 kilograms of marijuana following his release from federal prison in 2007 until February, 2009. The marijuana was transported in hockey bags in the amounts of 20 and 40 kilograms.

Police: Officer Hurt, Man Killed In Dispute Over Escort « CBS Detroit

WARREN (WWJ) – A Warren police officer has been released from the hospital after he was shot in the chest as he arrived to intervene in a dispute over escort services.

Officer Don Viars, 35, was saved by the bullet proof vest he was wearing.  His shooter was killed by police.

Police Commissioner Jere Green said the incident, at a home near 9 Mile Road and Van Dyke, began over an argument between two roommates and an escort about payment for “services rendered.”

“We concluded that the relationship was that these two men had sought out female company that night and went on Backpage.com, and made contact with this young lady who arrived at their house around midnight,” Green told WWJ Newsradio 950.

Green said, when they men wouldn’t pay the requested amount, the escort called her “bodyguard,” Robert Day, who was in the area.

Green said Day showed up, kicked in the door and put a gun to one of the roommates’ heads.
Someone called the police, and that’s when Day allegedly walked out of the home and shot Viars.
Police returned fire and killed him.

Green said he didn’t expect any charges to be filed against the escort, a 21-year-old downriver woman, who cooperated with police. Her name was not released.

Wednesday’s was the latest in a series of criminal incidents in recent months involving Backpage.com.
Earlier this summer, federal agents, in a multi-state crackdown, rescued six young teens who were forced to work as prostitutes in Metro Detroit.  They were advertised on Backpage and other adult websites.

In December, the bodies of four women, three who had advertised escort services on the site, were found in the trunks of abandoned cars in Detroit.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —
One of two suspects accused in the murder of a Brevard County deputy wants out of jail.

Andria Kerchner was with her boyfriend, Brandon Bradley, when he shot and killed Deputy Barbara Pill during a traffic stop in March.

Kerchner was in court Wednesday as her defense attorney, Michael Bross, tried to make the case that 19-year-old Kerchner was along for the ride and there's not enough evidence she committed a crime to hold her in jail.

Andria Kerchner
She is hoping Judge Morgan Reinman will allow her to bond out of jail until her trial.

Prosecutors questioned the sheriff's lead agent.

"She handed him the firearm," said Agent Don Reynolds.

Prosecutors are trying to show the judge there is enough evidence of her involvement in the killing to keep her locked up.

Authorities said Bradley actually pulled the trigger, killing Pill. He remains jailed, awaiting trial and could face the death penalty.

In one recording, Kerchner actually claimed Pill forced her to stay in Bradley's SUV after the deadly traffic stop.

"I was trying to get out. I was trying to get out. She told me to wait till he got out first. (Inaudible) she can't talk. She's dead," said Kerchner.

Kerchner's defense attorney has been trying to make the case that Kerchner wasn't clear-headed or in control.

"Did you take a blood test to determine what drugs, if any, were in her system at the time of the event?" asked Bross.

"I did not specifically do that," said Reynolds.

Pill's widow and two sons, both in law enforcement, watched from the front, sitting silent as the details of their mother's death were laid out for the judge.

Kerchner's attorney insisted recorded statements be played in court.

The judge plans to hold a second part to this hearing and then make her decision.

Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice said “our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all involved.”

Officer shot during car chase, incident caught on dash cam  - NY Daily News

An Indiana police officer was recovering Wednesday after being shot during a routine traffic stop, and the suspected gunman was later found with a cache of weapons and a pound of marijuana in his car, law enforcement officials said.

Fortville Officer Matt Fox was in “good” condition after being shot multiple times, and the terrifying incident was recorded on Fox’s dash cam.

The suspect, James Lockhart III, 27, was later killed in a shootout with police.

Fox had attempted to pull over Lockhart around 11:30 p.m. on July 27 for a broken taillight. The video captures Lockhart’s white Volvo speeding away. Officer Fox follows the Volvo into the front yard of a home, and that’s when the gunman jumped from the car, firing at least eight shots through the front windshield and driver’s side window of the police car.

On the video, Fox can be heard yelling “help, help, help” after being struck.
The gunman sped away and police mobilized to find the suspect, finally cornering him in a Lawrence, Ind., apartment complex, The Indianapolis Star reported.

Lockhart allegedly rammed several squad cars with his own vehicle in an attempt to get away, and then opened fire on officers, who returned fire, killing him. Lockhart had two dogs in the car. One was killed and the other ran away, The Star reported.

Police say they found a stockpile of weapons in the car, including an AR-15 assault rifle. He also had an SKS rifle, a .44 magnum and a .22-caliber pistol.

All those weapons are legal in the state, though Lockhart did not have a valid gun permit, according to Kendale Adams, spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Lockhart also had four machetes and a pound of marijuana packaged for street sale, Adams said.

WSVN-TV - Officer shot; 1 suspect dead and another arrested

WSVN-TV -

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida detective is recovering in the hospital after he was shot during an assignment.

The shooting occurred along 57th Avenue and Coral Way at around 6:45 p.m., Tuesday.
The victim, a detective with the Miami-Dade Police Narcotics Bureau, was investigating a home when he was shot three times in the abdomen. A witness who identified herself as "Gloria" described what she saw as she took her nightly walk in the area. "A red vehicle turned on 62nd and Eighth very quickly. It looked like it almost ran the red light and the police car came after it," she said.

Law enforcement officers from agencies all over the county then went on a manhunt for the suspects. Authorities shut down several blocks of Coral Way near Southwest 62nd Avenue as they searched for the shooters.

Before the shooting occurred, a tip came into Miami-Dade Police and the FBI. Miami-Dade Police Detective Javier Baez talked about what happened after authorities received that tip. He said, "At approximately 7 o'clock this evening, Miami-Dade Police officers, along with the FBI, received a tip in regards to a narcotics investigation occurring at a residence behind me. At that particular time, detectives approached the residence, and they were encountered by a white Latin male in his early 50s."

That is when, police said, one of the subjects opened fire, striking the officer. "As they approached this individual, there was a second individual inside of a vehicle who, out of nowhere, began to open fire on the detectives," said Baez. "Those detectives returned fire, striking this individual and subsequently killed him on the scene. The second individual, they detained him and apprehended him, and he's currently being questioned."

The detective was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital and was rushed into surgery. More than 100 members of law enforcement from across South Florida came out to the hospital to show support for the officer. "If we're going to be anywhere, we want to be here," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Roy Rutland. "We have the best doctors in the country taking care of our cops."

Tuesday night, the victim got out of surgery. Doctors said the officer is now in stable condition and is expected to survive. "He is awake and talking, his breathing tube is out and he's out of surgery, so he's relatively stable," said Dr. Marc Grossman.

Meanwhile, back at the scene of the shooting, some residents in the area are unable to get to their homes due to heavy police presence. Resident Oriemis Argote said, "We've lived here for 31 years now, and this is the first crazy thing that has ever happened. I was at the house and my dad heard gunshots, but he said, 'There's somebody throwing fireworks,' and all of a sudden, all this happened."

"It sounded like a series of gunshots. I can't tell you if the officer had the opportunity to fire back, but from what I understand and from what I heard, it sounded like fireworks," said resident Julian Arroyo. "What can you do? We're living in a place where everybody wants to be different characters, different personalities, and you never know who's coming through your door. Miami's a place where all kinds of things happen."

Authorities said Miami-Dade Police shot one of the suspects after the officer was shot. The other suspect was taken into custody.

As of Wednesday morning, Coral Way remains closed between Southwest 59th Avenue and 62nd Avenue, as detectives stay on scene to continue their investigation.

Man charged with killing Millard deputy no longer faces death penalty | Deseret News

Man charged with killing Millard deputy no longer faces death penalty | Deseret News

SPANISH FORK, UT — A man accused of murdering Millard County sheriff's deputy no longer faces a possible death sentence.

Roberto Miramontes Roman, 40, is charged with capital murder, accused of shooting and killing deputy Josie Greathouse Fox during a traffic stop near Delta in 2010. Fox, 37, was shot twice in the chest. But a judge has determined that Roman is "mentally retarded" and ineligible to receive the death penalty.

Final arrangements were made Tuesday for Roman's two-week trial, which is set to begin Aug. 13. If convicted, Roman could have received the death penalty. But after multiple examinations and a two-day hearing on the matter, 4th District Judge Donald Eyre determined the man was "mentally retarded."

In his decision, Eyre cited a 2002 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that determined that defendants who have mental retardation cannot be executed under the eighth amendment. The judge referred to the testimony of one psychologist who determined Roman was "an outlier in his family" who required additional help and support "because he was seen as impaired," the ruling states.

Another doctor said two informants reported that Roman may have been born with perinatal anoxia, in which oxygen is cut off to the infant during the birthing process.

Eyre quoted another psychologist who noted that someone who is "mentally retarded" may not have an obvious impairment and may still drive, work and gain an education, but found that Roman's frontal lobes were "deficient, which in turn explains his lack of reasoning and impulse control."

A number of tests indicated Roman has a low IQ  and low academic functioning levels. The judge said that while Roman's IQ score was a 71, one point above the sometimes-used cutoff point of 70, he had other concerns.

"The court finds that the defendant has still demonstrated that his deficits in general intellectual functioning are significant," the ruling states.

Noting various doctors' reports, adaptive functioning problems, reasoning and impulse control deficits and after sorting through other factors, Eyre determined Roman is, in fact, "mentally retarded" and removed the death penalty as a possible sentence. Prosecutors later withdrew their notice of intent to seek the death penalty.

On Jan. 5, 2010, Roman was taking a drive and smoking methamphetamine with Fox's brother, Ryan Greathouse, when he saw a car in the distance and said he planned to open fire if it was a police vehicle, according to court testimony. Greathouse exited the vehicle and, soon after, Fox initiated a traffic stop.

Roman allegedly told police that he was angry he was pulled over when he took care to stay in his lane and follow the speed limit. Believing he was being stopped "because he was Mexican," Roman reportedly told police he caught a glimpse of the police officer and immediately started shooting, according to court testimony.

Ryan Greathouse was found dead in a Las Vegas bedroom a few months after the shooting.
In addition to aggravated murder, Roman also faces charges of tampering with evidence and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person in connection with Fox's death.
