BRIDGEPORT, Ohio -
A police K-9 who was thrown over a 30-foot cliff while arresting an aggravated burglary suspect Tuesday morning in Belmont County is in good health and the suspect behind bars.
Bridgeport police said they responded to a call at the Lansing Garden Apartments in Bridgeport. It's there they said Shelby Williams beat up his girlfriend and then left the apartment, only to return to tear it apart. According to police Williams left the apartment a second time and proceeded to flee into the woods near the property.
Officers with the Bridgeport Police Department and the Belmont County Sheriff's Office said they were able to locate Williams through his phone and called in Bridgeport Police K-9 Officer Kevin Yates, Bridgeport K-9 German Shepherd Santos and Belmont County Deputy Tom DeVull.
They said Santos was able to locate Williams on top of a hill behind the Heartlands-Lansing Nursing Home and went into the woods to apprehend him. When Santos reached Williams, they said Williams threw Santos over a cliff, but Santos was able make it back up the hill and continue with the arrest. That's when Williams placed Santos in a headlock and began to bang his head on a rock, according to police.
Officer Yates said he told Williams to release the dog, to which Williams said "I am going to kill the dog." Once police caught up to the area the two were in, they were able to place Williams under arrest.
Once Williams was detained, officers called New Horizon Animal Hospital who sent two veterinarians to the scene to examine Santos and transport him back to the hospital. They found Santos to be in good health despite the ordeal with some scratches, bruising and a knot on his head, according to police.
Williams was charged with aggravated burglary, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer and cruelty to animals.
Santos was cleared for duty and will be returning to work as soon as possible, according to police.
