Jail Escapee Who Shot A Deputy in South El Monte Arrested

Darnell and Tania Washington, the husband and wife accused of attempted murder of a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy, have been arrested in Seattle, Wash., officials said Wednesday.

The two were taken into custody in King County, near Seattle, at 11 a.m. The suspects were reportedly driving a stolen vehicle when local authorities attempted to pull them over. The suspects refused to stop and King County deputies began a pursuit, which terminated with a collision by the duo, according to information released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspects were later positively identified as the husband and wife wanted in the Los Angeles and San Bernardino County areas.

ABC 7 news reported the stolen vehicle driven at the time was owned by a murder victim from the San Francisco area.

Darnell Washington reportedly escaped from the San Bernardino County Jail Aug. 28 with the help of his wife Tania. Just before 9 a.m. on Sept. 2, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy from the Temple Station was fired on by Darnell with a shotgun after approaching the vehicle driven by the husband and wife in South El Monte, authorities said.

The two exchanged gunfire. The deputy was hit, but sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The couple escaped in a stolen vehicle, drove to the South Gate area where the stole another vehicle, officials said. The two were considered armed and dangerous.

Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were en route to Seattle, officials said.
