Deputy Aleman's family releases statement on his death - TODAY'S TMJ4
MILWAUKEE - The family of a Milwaukee Sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty released a public statement for the first time since his death.
Deputy Sergio Aleman died Tuesday after crashing his department vehicle into the back of a flatbed truck on I-43 near Fond Du Lac Avenue.
The 18-year-veteran leaves behind five children, ages six to 22 and a wife.
Saturday, they released a family photo and a statement thanking the community and Sheriff's Office for their support.
"We, the Aleman Family, would like to express our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the entire community for the outpouring of love and support during this most difficult time. Sergio truly has had a tremendous impact on the lives of many. He was a loving husband, dedicated father and friend to many. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed."
Aleman's funeral is set for Tuesday.
Sheriff David Clarke said Aleman had been driving southbound on the interstate when he approached an area of traffic congestion. The flat-bed truck Aleman hit had slowed due to that congestion in the Marquette interchange.
Clarke said the crash doesn't appear criminal in nature. They're still investigating what exactly happened but during a press conference earlier in the week, Clarke said the driver of the flat-bed truck was not at fault.
Two memorial funds in Aleman's name are set up to help his family. Donations can be made at any M&I Bank or any Tri-City Bank.
