Morris man killed in deputy-involved shooting

MORRIS, Okla. - Two Okmulgee County sheriff's deputies were involved in a fatal shooting Wednesday.

Deputies responded to a home about 9:30 a.m. in Morris, about seven miles east of Okmulgee, to perform a welfare check.

The two deputies arrived at the home and made contact with a male subject outside the residence. Officials say the man appeared distraught and approached the deputies with a weapon.

The deputies fired, hitting 50-year-old Robert McMurtry.  He was pronounced dead at the scene just after 10 a.m. by Okmulgee County EMS.

Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice said “our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all involved.”

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation of the deputy-involved shooting, and the results of the investigation will be sent to the Okmulgee County district attorney.

The two deputies were placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
