Deputy, officer, suspect shot after Benton Co. police pursuit



SALEM -- A Benton County sheriff's deputy and a Salem police officer were shot after a pursuit and crash Saturday night, police said. The suspect was also shot.

Deputies responded at about 10:30 p.m. to the report of a man with a weapon trespassing at a home on NW Scenic Avenue, according to the Benton Co. Sheriff's Office.

The suspect was seen leaving the property when deputies arrived. He was driving a car that was possibly stolen, a sheriff's office statement read. He attempted to elude police, but crashed near NW Springhill Drive and NW Independence Highway.

The driver then fled on foot. Responding officers started a search and were confronted by the suspect, who fired on them.

One deputy and one officer were struck by gunfire and suffered serious injuries. They were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The suspect was also hit by gunfire. He was flown by helicopter to a Willamette Valley hospital. His condition was not released.

The identities of all involved are being withheld pending confirmation of the identity of the suspect and family notifications.
